Guitarist Jeff Miller - Cincinnati, Ohio

Variax/PRS style

I've been working on this for quite a while off and on. At the moment, I have

four conversion projects in the works. Now that the CD is out of the way, I can get back

in and finish them all up. The clear is drying on the blue Strat and I'll be finishing

it up in the next couple weeks. This one is my FIRST attempt at doing a hand carved

set-neck body. This will be a "Deluxe" carved-top set-neck 25" scale 24-fret Variax-PRS.

I guess we'll see how the Variax sounds put into a 24-fret set-neck 25" scale PRS

type body. It is AAAAA 1/2" flame maple top with a Black Korina back. I'm not pulling any

punches on this one. It is the best of everything all the way around. This is VERY

labor intensive, but it sure is fun to watch it take shape. No one ordered this, I'm just

doing it for fun and to see if I can actually do it and make it look and play good.

Headstock cut and shaped. Tuner test fit.

I got a wild hair and I decided I didn't like that black plastic truss rod

cover I had. I figured I'd try to make my own from some of the bookmatched

flame maple I had left over from the top. It turned out pretty cool!

Finished up the top carving and cut the routs for the direct mount humbuckers.

I now have an extreme amount of respect for the real luthiers that carve out

violins and things. It is a lot of work to scrape one of these tops out by hand!  I

can't believe it looks half way right! The pickups will mount right to the wood

with no pickup ring. I like the clean look of direct mounted humbuckers.
